FLORENCE, ITALY – Moments of fear in Piazza della Signoria, Florence, for a runaway horse that launched into a gallop, dragging a carriage behind it that crashed into a car escorted by the Minister of the Interior, Luciana Lamorgese.
It happened in the early afternoon of Monday 14 June, within a few seconds: the horse of a carriage stationed in the square, at the first experiences in the service of the “fiaccherai” (carriages that transport tourists on sightseeing tours), was on the side closest to the Generali building when he suddenly got wild and started at a gallop towards the Loggia de’ Lanzi, dragging the carriage with him – for the first part of his ride.
The carriage dropped off, getting stuck between two cars, one of which was part of the minister’s escort. The officers on duty just had time to dodge, while the two cars were visibly dented.
The horse entered the Loggia de’ Lanzi, where it was recovered by the driver of the carriage, helped by some of his colleagues. No one was involved and the horse is fine.
Sonny Richichi, president of IHP, an association for the protection of horses, then spoke about the incident, defining carriages «a form of exploitation that is now unacceptable in 2021. We also need to worry about the health of animals. Because horses do not run wild, but react to negative stimuli or fear, reacting in the way that is most natural for them: escape».
